About This Trip

19-day cross-country road trip in August 2025 from Franklin, NC through 8 states: Tennessee, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho. The route hit the Colorado Rockies twice — once heading west through the San Juan Mountains and once on the return through the Vail corridor.

The Colorado portion covered the Million Dollar Highway (US-550) from Durango through Silverton and Molas Pass to Ouray, the Telluride area, Buena Vista near the Collegiate Peaks, Leadville, and the Steamboat Springs corridor. Beyond Colorado, the trip continued north to Yellowstone National Park, Cooke City in Montana, Grand Teton National Park, and Jackson, Wyoming before looping back south through Flaming Gorge and re-entering Colorado.

Practical Notes

  • Driving: High-altitude mountain passes with steep grades and switchbacks. The Million Dollar Highway between Silverton and Ouray has no guardrails on some sections. Molas Pass tops out at 10,910 feet. Leadville sits at 10,152 feet.
  • Duration: 19 days, 8 states. Transit days (NC to NM and back) bookend the mountain driving.
  • Season: August conditions were generally clear at altitude, though mountain weather can change quickly above 10,000 feet.
  • Route: The trip entered Colorado from the south via Raton Pass and exited north through Steamboat Springs to Wyoming. On the return, re-entered Colorado from the north and exited south through Pagosa Springs to Taos, NM.
